Peghead volute

Posted on Posted in On The Bench

Detail of the peghead volute and overlay on the back of the neck for Koa/Adirondack GC16.  The neck is striped hondouran mahogany with a curly maple ribbon.  The volute overlay is ebony/maple /ebony.  The volute is a geometric transition between two different dimensions and angles at the junction of neck and peghead.

Setting up a neck

Fine tuning the compound radius on the neck of a Koa/Sitka, GC16 acoustic guitar.  I use specifically shaped templates for different neck profiles.   they guide the transition from the generic machine radius to a custom fit for an individual player.

Diamonds in the rough

Posted on Posted in On The Bench

This is a sequence of photos showing the resaw of a nice block of figured white oak crotch.  The piece was rescued from the woodpile after being rejected as unsplittable.  The properties that saved it from the wood stove are readily visible as figure in the three cuts.

A nice look

Posted on Posted in On The Bench

I came in the shop the other morning, 6:30 am, and the light was “just right” on this archtop under construction on the bench.  Nothing technical or luthier geek here, just a nice look…  I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
